This R2-D2 figure was highly anticipated before its release, due to it finally being the right scale with the other Black Series figures. As the previous R2D2 figures were underscaled.
This is my first Black Series R2-D2, having mainly stayed away from collecting too many 6-inch Star Wars figures. So, unfortunately, I can’t share the pain of having to make do with having under-scaled R2S of the past.
What mainly caught my attention was the Kenner style vintage packaging of the 40th anniversary of Return of the Jedi, much like the previous ESB releases, and I wasn’t going to be late to this party for once.

SCULPTING
This is an excellent attempt by Hasbro to right the wrongs of previous attempts at R2D2 in my opinion. Having watched a few videos and checked out comparison photos, they have really tired to capture a better screen-accurate R2. And in my amateur opinion, I think have done a great job at capturing the essence of R2D2.
Now, obviously, there are options like Bandai SH Figuarts and Medicom’s Mafex line of figures, which are a higher-end price point and quality and obviously, a lot of debate among fans over what is best and some of their offerings are absolutely fantastic.
But, I still prefer the Black Series myself, just something about the overall design and sculpting, I just prefer for my Star Wars figures. I don’t like all the figures they have done, for example, Lando needs work and Darth Vader is slowly getting better with each new release.

PAINT
Paint is nice and crisp on R2, no slop on my version and the blue and sliver paint applications really pop with the off-white plastic.

ARTICULATION
R2 obviously will only have so much articulation, being a droid and not a humanoid character. You can move his legs and turn his head. He’s also got a third leg you can drop down if wanted.

ACCESSORIES
R2 comes with a number of different attachments. They all look great and fit in nice and snug in the appropriate ports for them.
Also you can store his unneeded accessories inside R2 as his head pops up. This is a really neat feature that helps keep his accessories neat and tidy and out of the way, yet always in reach.

POTENTIAL PROBLEMS
Not a lot that I can think of. He’s petty much a solid figure and the accessory storage is a great idea.

PRICE
I paid the regular retail price for this figure. He might be a little bit more pricey these days, though. Shop around to try and get a good deal.

OVERALL
I’m really happy with this particular R2D2 figure from Hasbro. I think they have really improved on the previous ones and kept it at a good price point too. He comes with a good amount of accessories and play features and he really looks great next to Han and Leia in my display. Now, I just need to get a C-3PO to go with him.
