REVIEW – MATTEL MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE CHRONICLES SKELETOR

Continuing my reviews for Mattel’s Masters Of The Universe Chronicles figures, is Skeletor in all his evil boss, bad guy glory. Much like Man-At-Arms, I wasn’t necessarily going to buy Skeletor to go with my small collection of MOTU Chronicles figures. However, I did cave in and bought the rest of the figures from the series currently available. If not for the sole reason to actually have reviewed a complete lineup of figures for once on my blog.

Skeletor himself is a bit of a mixed bag, unfortunately. Is he a worthy counterpart to He-Man? You can find out below!

SCULPTING

I feel like Mattel has done a great job with the sculpting of this figure, at least. Does it match the source material well? Yes. Even if, in my personal opinion, the character design is a bit lacking. Taken purely on appearance, the figure is an excellent representation of Skeletor from the MOTU movie. However, his hood gets in the way a lot and sits a bit funny, and I feel like his neck is too short. He also suffers from a bit of a loose waist and hips.

My personal opinion is that his boots look out of place and his chest armour looks like it should have matched the original figure a bit more closely – it just looks too sparse.

PAINT

There’s a really nice white wash on Skeletor’s skin that really adds to the look of the figure. It is a bit mismatched on his neck, though, making it stand out a bit too much. The dry brushing on his armour looks great and complements it well. And the wash on the figure’s face is easily the best part of the paint application on the figure.

ARTICULATION

 Just like all the previous MOTU Chronicles figures, the articulation is excellent! However, Skeletor’s soft plastic cape does get in the way of his poseability, and so does his hood. It really makes it hard to pose his head at all, as the hood is constantly getting in the way and making it a chore to even pose his head looking straight on. Furthermore, that short neck is not doing him any favours, and the odd spot where the head does sit makes the jaw articulation feel almost pointless. The rest of the body is very similar to He-Man and is very fun to pose, minus any looseness of joints.

ACCESSORIES

Skeletor comes with his Havoc Staff and some extra fist hands, and that’s it. if any figure needed more hands its this one as you could make him so much more expressive with a few more hand options considering hes not as poseable thanks to that cape of his. The Havoc Staff is definitely a fun accessory and very important for Skeletor to wield; it fits in the one holding hand nice and snug.

POTENTIAL PROBLEMS

Nothing too much to worry about. Like the rest of the figures in this line so far, they are all very well-made figures.

PRICE

I paid $45 from Amazon to get my hands on a copy of Skeletor. Seeing I can’t find him in shops anymore, it was a necessary evil to go through with the purchase. That’s the standard retail price, and it’s still reasonable considering Skeletor seems somewhat popular among the other characters in the line.

OVERALL

Skeletor is not without a few glaring issues – his cape being difficult, his short neck and almost useless jaw articulation and his hood getting in the way of being able to pose his head easily. However, he’s still fun to pose and have standing there looking cool. It would be nice if they made a second movie, and if his costume design could be closer to his original toy, as that would make him a lot more fun to pose. Perhaps Mattel could make a cartoon version using this body as a base, but still in a realistic style?

Is it worth picking up Skeletor to display with your He-Man? Yes, of course it is. But just don’t expect to be blown away by the figure as it has a lot of sticking points. Still, a nice figure that will look good on your display shelf and kinda needed by collectors to go with He-Man after all. Worth picking up as long as you aren’t paying over the retail price for him.

My continuing Masters of the Universe Chronicles figure review tonight will be Man-At-Arms. I picked him up after not being sure if I wanted to get him or not. I’ve never been a big Man-At-Arms fan in general. But Idris Elba’s performance in the movie won me over, plus the armour looks absolutely excellent in the movie. 

Besides looking to pick up Skeletor or the Orko figure. I don’t think Mattel has anything else coming up. (Unless they can make that version of MerMan in the background of the Orko scene – I’d be all over that. Hopefully, Mattel make it happen!

SCULPTING

I think this is a solid likeness of Idris Elba; what lets it down in my opinion is the paint application on the face. I really think that the paint could have been applied a lot better to enhance the sculpt in this instance. Besides this, the rest of the body and armour sculpting is great! I really like all the detail on the armour, and I’d say it’s pretty much a similar body to He-Man, even if there might be some minute differences between both.

PAINT

Paint application overall is good. But like mentioned above, I think the paint application on the face could be a lot better. I think it really lets down the figure and makes it look worse than it should. The paint application on the armour, however, is great! I really like the wash over the orange of the armour it really pops. The green plastic and Man-At-Arms helmet looks great too!

ARTICULATION

 Just like all the previous MOTU Chronicles figures the articulation is excellent! It’s definitely a joy to pose these figures; I’ve even included a photo of him crouching to demonstrate how good it is. My only complaint is that Man-At-Arms’ legs could have slight drop down hips? So they are a little bit troublesome. I think for whatever reason the hips of these figures could use improvement. Besides that, lots of articulation and fun to pose.

ACCESSORIES

Man-At-Arms comes with the following accessories: his mace, his handgun and grabbing hands and fist hands. All the accessories are made well and fit in his hands without too much trouble. However, it did take a little bit more time to work that handgun into his hands. But, it’s currently winter so I expect the plastic would normally be a little bit more softer. I still think a trigger hand and a splayed out hands would be a good addition for these figures.

I’d still say I’m expecting to break the wrist joints as it can be a bit difficult to swap easily, but it hasn’t happened yet. So that’s a win as far as I’m concerned.

POTENTIAL PROBLEMS

Nothing too much to worry about. Like the rest of the figures in this line so far, they are all very well-made figures.

PRICE

I paid $35 from my local Kmart. I think that’s a pretty good price, as online you are looking  at, at least $46 or more. But, I haven’t seen Man-At-Arms at any other stores, so he might be harder to find.

OVERALL

If you are on the fence about buying this figure, I’d say he’s definitely worth the money. However, the weak paint application on the face does drag the overall enjoyment of the figure down a little bit. Besides this, it’s still a great Man-At-Arms figure from the movie.

REVIEW – MATTEL MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE CHRONICLES RAM MAN

Ram Man comes included with Fisto as an Amazon exclusive two pack and can be purchased on his own too.

All jokes about Ram Man and Fisto being in a two pack aside. It was nice to include to great characters from the movie together to make it easier to get both at the same time.

SCULPTING

This sculpt of Ram Man is great and the likeness to actor Jon Xue Zhang even underneath the helmet is great too. Ram Man’s costume design is easily my favourite so far. This figure has done an excellent job at translating it from what we see in the movie.

PAINT

No real problems with any of the paint on Ram Man. It’s all nice and neat. With the one exception being that some of the weathering on one of his boots doesn’t match the same amount as on the other boot so it looks a bit odd. Otherwise no other problems.

ARTICULATION

Ram Man’s articulation is about the same as the other figures in this line so far and gives you enough articulation to pose the figure fairly dynamically. Unlike the other figures I have reviewed so far his waist is not loose. I really enjoyed posing Ram Man he was fun to play around with.

ACCESSORIES

You get a battle axe for Ram Man, it looks great and easily fits in his hand. The extra fist hands are good and finally he comes with leg extensions for his ramming effect. I had an issue with mine as the right extension wouldn’t fit on properly. 

I ended up drilling mine out a little bit and eventually got it to fit on snug enough as it was a little bit disappointing only because I was in the middle of taking photos and initially thought perhaps it was two of the same side as they aren’t interchangeable pieces – they are meant for each leg only.

POTENTIAL PROBLEMS

Besides an ill-fitting accessory, no real issues with Ram Man

I paid the standard Amazon price of $89.99 plus shipping to get the two pack the very next day. I was happy with that and it was good to get the exclusive two pack so quick.

OVERALL

Ram Man is another great addition to the MOTU Chronicles line and definitely worth picking up. He’s a fun figure and looks just like he did in the movie. Definitely worth having in your collection.

My second MOTU Chronicles review is Fisto, who comes in an Amazon exclusive two pack with Ram Man. 

All the fisting jokes aside from the movie, I guess Fisto really does just fist stuff. But in al honestly a lot of the original MOTU characters did have lazy character names in my opinion. 

Fisto comes in an Amazon exclusive two pack with Ram Man and can still be ordered from Amazon and at the moment this is the only way to get your hands on Fisto.

SCULPTING

This sculpt of Fisto is excellent and in my opinion the likeness to actor Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson is great! The rest of the figure does a good job match how the character looks in the movie and is sculpted great too.

PAINT

There is one main issue I have with this figure’s paint and it’s that I feel the hair and beard are too dark. I think a lighter shade of brown would have helped any problems with the overall look of the character in my opinion. Otherwise like other figures from this line there is little to no issue with paint applications.

ARTICULATION

 Fisto’s articulation is about the same as He-Man’s and unfortunately has the same loose waist as He-Man, which is disappointing as it does hinder the enjoyment of posing the figure. All the other joints are nice and tight though.

ACCESSORIES

You get a power effect for Fisto’s fist hand and some alternate hands too. All the accessories are great! But I’d still want some more hand variations in all honesty.

The power effect really makes it fun to take photos of Fisto and helps add a little bit more oomph to the photos and poses.

POTENTIAL PROBLEMS

Nothing to worry about with Fisto.

This is a great live action MOTU Fisto figure and you would be glad you sprang for the two pack. Fisto is an excellent figure and worth the purchase.

If you haven’t seen yet the new Masters Of The Universe Live-action movie it’s that bad, it’s not amazing, but it’s not terrible either and worth watching at least once.

Unfortunately for me, I didn’t get around to watching it in the cinemas but did watch it on Amazon Prime and I enjoyed it enough to want to buy some figures from the new movie. 

I was still able to find some of the toys at retail stores. He-Man and Man-At-Arms I acquired from Kmart, and the Fisto and Ram Man from Amazon. I did hold off buying this figure when I initially saw them. But eventually broke down and bought He-Man because the new body looks really well made and I wanted to see how fun it was to pose and play with, and then of course, I had to buy more figures. 

Tonight I’ll cover He-Man, and in the next few weeks I’ll review Fisto, Ram Man and hopefully at least Man-At-Arms too in addition to my already scheduled reviews.

SCULPTING

This figure has a great likeness to He-Man actor Nicholas Galitzine. You can easily tell it’s him and it’s a stern/focused expression on his face. The hair looks great too, and it’s cast in a nice light brown tone. 

The body sculpting is definitely excellent too! The muscle definition really helps sell the “Most Powerful Man in the Universe” idea. It’s not overwhelmingly muscular like the original toys or too lean either. The way Mattel have made the arm and leg joints really reminds me of SH Figuarts too, which adds to the appeal.

My only complaint would be that the flesh tone is probably a little bit too yellow.

PAINT

There is not a lot of paint used here. Mainly on He-Man’s armour and accessories, if at all. The paint application on the figure’s face is nice and clean and any other paint is neat too.

ARTICULATION

 He-Man has a lot of articulation and it enables you to pose He-Man in most of the poses you would normally like to put him in. Most likely holding his power sword in some way. Even the classic “I have the power” pose is easy enough to pose him. What bothers me is the loose waist and right hip, which made it annoying to get him to hold some of the poses I wanted to put the figure in. Hopefully it’s just He-Man with this issue and not all the figures. 

ACCESSORIES

You get the Power Sword and some extra fist hands. Not a lot of accessories and some extra hands would have been nice to see included. The Sword is great and fits in the holder on his back without issue.

POTENTIAL PROBLEMS

Nothing to worry about with this toy. Except those loose joints. Otherwise it’s great and rock solid.

PRICE

I paid $35 from Kmart and was happy with that considering it retails for about $46 online here in Australia. The lower price is definitely the better option.

OVERALL

This is a pretty great He-Man figure and overall has its minor flaws but is still fun to pose and play with, and that makes it enjoyable enough for me. Definitely worth picking up the Chronicles version if you haven’t already. It’s a great figure!
